POOLE ANGLICAN DEANERY NEWSSHEET
September 2009

To PCC secretaries, magazine editors and others

Some of this  information comes from the Communications Department of the Diocese and I am in touch with a number of other sources including magazines from our local churches and parishes in the Poole Deanery.   Please feel free to use as required.

GENERAL INFORMATION

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY

This is a very simple concept, building on research by the charity Tearfund, that three million people – over six percent of the UK population - would come back to church if they received a personal invitation to do so.   In all, around 3,000 churches were involved in 2008 with over 37,000 people accepting the invitation to return to church on the last Sunday in September. Last year, 26 parishes from our diocese took part in a pilot scheme. This year, every parish in the diocese is being encouraged to join in this initiative. What’s the date then?   Sunday, September 27th.

A REMINDER ABOUT THE ADLHELM MISSION FUND

Does your parish have plans for mission but lack the funds to put them into action?  Since 2006, the Aldhelm Mission Fund has supported 34 mission and outreach activities across the Diocese.  Grants are normally in the £500 - £4,000 range, supporting initiatives such as a one day outreach event or running an after school activity for the community. Funding for church buildings is not included and applications will be expected to provide partnership funding.  Further details from http://www.salisburyanglican.org.uk/existing/showpage.asp?page=473

GOODBYE AND WELCOME

Nicky Davies, Editor of the Sarum Link has said farewell after seven successful years in the post, and making the publication ever more readable.   Her successor is Kate Viggers who will be acting as Editor for the next six months at least.

APPOINTMENT MADE FOR HEATHERLANDS

The Diocese has announced that  the Reverend Peter Taylor, currently assistant Curate at Branksome Park All Saints is to be Priest-in-Charge at Heatherlands St John.   The licensing will be on Sunday, September 6th at 3 p.m.

NEW DIOCESAN ACCOUNTANT

Mr Philip Musselwhite has been appointed to succeed Chris Dragonetti as Diocesan Accountant and has already started working alongside Chris on a part time basis, working Mondays to Wednesdays.   He will transfer to full time from September 1st and work with Chris for a couple of months before Chris finally retires in November.

ACTING ARCHDEACON OF DORSET

The Reverend Jonathan Ball, Senior Chaplain to the Bishop of Salisbury, writes to say that Bishop David is very pleased to announce that the Venerable Patrick Evans, Archdeacon of Canterbury until 2007, and now retired to Tolpuddle, has very kindly offered to assist as a temporary Archdeacon of Dorset until the arrival of Alistair Magowan’s replacement.   Patrick was Archdeacon of Maidstone, and latterly Canterbury, from 1989 and so is extremely experienced.   Bishop David is very grateful for his kind offer which will prove invaluable over the coming months. To ensure that the role remains manageable, the Archdeacon of  Sherborne, the Venerable Paul Taylor, will share the workload.  Bishop David has signed an instrument appointing both Patrick and Paul to fulfil all archidiaconal duties (except adjudication in Faculties, which falls to the Chancellor) from August 1st.   The Bishop asks you to welcome Patrick, to assist him in his duties, and to support him with your prayers.

MISSION AVIATION  FELLOWSHIP APPEAL

The MAF is looking for a number of volunteers to form a network throughout England and Wales to promote the work and ministry of the charity within their own locality.   Training on presentation skills and other aspects of the role will be given.    If you would like to know more about the work which involves so much which is a help to other mission organizations, the website is www.maf-uk.org.   If this particular job inntrigues you then get in touch with Kevin Crook, the Volunteers Manager for MAF on kevin.crook@maf-uk.org  or ring him on 01933 279782.

HELP AND ADVICE NEEDED FOR ST ALDHELM’S

Our stained glass windows are fine, but the "ferramenta", the metal work on the outside of the windows, holding the windows into the stonework are rusted and need treating and painting. Have any other churches recently had similar works carried out and perhaps could recommend a company for advice?  Tel:  (01202) 764420 or email office@st-aldhelm.com.        Many thanks for your help.

BOURNEMOUTH WILLIAM TEMPLE ASSOCIATION

Information about the meetings of this group are now available and the theme this time is “Christ the Light of the World”.   The venue is the Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth usually on the first Monday of the month , with a meal at 7 p.m., to be booked beforehand with the secretary (jean_77campbell@yahoo.com) costing £13.25.   Visitors to the talk at 8 p.m., with coffee, will be charged £3.50.   Speakers from October to May include the former Dean of Westminster Abbey, the Very Reverend Dr Wesley Carr, Mary Randall OBE of Bournemouth Salvation Army, Captain Philip Johanson, the International Secretary of the Church Army, the Reverend Ian Terry, Rector of Bournemouth Town Centre parish and Canon Edward Probert, Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral.   Any further information can be obtained from the Chairman, the Reverend Glyn James (glyn.james1@ntlworld.com).

SARUM LINK VACANCY

The Diocese is currently looking for a new member for the group known as SLEP (Sarum Link Editorial Panel) which gives editorial direction to those responsible for Sarum Link, the newspaper for the Diocese of Salisbury, and is part of the communication function for the Diocese.   The aims of Sarum Link are:

1.          to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel,
2.          to inform and inspire Church life,
3.          to act as a link between the diocese, deanery and parishes,
4.          to enable the Church to engage with the wider community, and
5.          to challenge prejudices
by:
-    informing, encouraging and entertaining readers,
-    reporting topical news positively,
-    facing awkward issues, and
-    providing a forum for debate.

Meetings are held at Church House in Salisbury every couple of months.   Two new members are being sought and at least one needs to be from East Dorset.   Journalistic experience is not necessarily needed.   The “job spec” is:

·         to offer practical support and advice to the Editor,
·         to encourage contributions and actively seek to increase distribution, readership and awareness,
·         to provide feedback on previous issues,
·         to plan for future issues, and
·         to review editorial and production procedures and advise on those areas which may require improvement.
The contact for suggestions for people who might be interested is sarum.link@salisbury.anglican.org.

HOSPITAL RADIO NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS

After 37 years of playing “The Best  Music Choice”, Hospital Radio Bedside has recently been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.   As a charity run entirely by volunteers, broadcasts go by landline to five local NHS hospitals in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole and Wimborne, from the newly refurbished studios in the grounds  at the rear of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.   The aim is to serve patients by playing the music they want to hear and this is primarily achieved by visiting wards and collecting requests.    The organization is currently recruiting hospital visitors to join the team.   All that is needed is a couple of spare hours each week and to enjoy talking to people.   This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference to those in hospital, especially those whose friends and family are unable to visit.   Full training and support is provided.   Other voluntary opportunities for the organization might be in one of the two charity shops which rely on unpaid help and donations.   They are situated in Parkstone and Boscombe.      Further information can be obtained from the website on www.hospitalradiobedside.co.uk or by ringing the studio on 01202 303887 which has an answerphone facility.   Sue Rudd, Head of Hospital Visiting, looks forward to hearing from possible recruits.
(It may be worth pointing out that because  Hospital visiting involves  security aspects, those doing this work may need to have both the hospital safety checks plus CRB validation.)

HILFIELD COURSES

Hilfield Friary, near Dorchester, has recently announced its Autumn Programme of events.   There are weekend courses  called “Living in Gratitude and Peace” from October 2nd to 4th – a “Buddhist Christian Retreat” from October 16th to 18th – “Women of Faith and To-day’s World” from October 23rd to 25th – “Jesus, Climate and Earth Inclusive Discipleship” from November 13th to 15th.   There is also a Weekend of Poetry from November 20th to 22nd.   Individual day events include a Stigmata Festival on September 19th, Breadmaking on October 17th and  drama on the subject of Mother Julian on October 24th.   The Friary will be open on September 12th as part of the Dorset Historical Churches Bike Ride and promise “repairs and encouragement if necessary”.   To find out more visit hilfieldproject@franciscans.org.uk.

RETIREMENT AGE ACCOMMODATION

There is sometimes sheltered self-contained accommodation available at the Old Rope Walk in Blandford Road, Hamworthy, or St George’s, Church Street, Poole Old Town, for those over retirement age.   Application should be made to Mrs G Dipple, at 360 Blandford Road, Hamworthy, BH15 4JH.

OUT IN THE OPEN

St George’s ladies and others no doubt , were in evidence again in August with their once a year stall in Poole High Street, selling goodies like jams, cakes, biscuits and chutneys.   Apart from the advantages of the home baked items, this also gives a high visibility to the church and its people.    Perhaps something that others might like to think about doing at some time.   In Swanage, we understand that the Churches Together  members are in current process of holding a non-money  stall in the Tuesday morning market which is described as an “Awareness Raiser”.   This is principally an information giver with details about all that local churches do together and other uses of their buildings apart from Sunday services,  plus such  possible needs as baptisms, weddings and funerals.   The aim is to show how God is at work in the community.

A MAGAZINE RESURFACES

Whether it was the helpful and supporting remarks by the Archbishop of Canterbury, or simply how much is now happening in the centre of Poole, but St James’ Church has re-introduced  a monthly magazine.    Our congratulations for an attractive and interesting  publication called  “The Tower”,  and all good wishes to Claire Hodgson, the editor, who cut her teeth on a smaller publication which has been informing the parish for some months.
